Where possible, the Carer Council seeks to consult with the carer community on the topics that it is currently discussing.
Revisit this page to keep updated on topics open for consultation and to view updates on the feedback the Carer Council has received. Updates will also be provided via CFKC’s member newsletter and social media.
Recent consultation
The Carer Council recently invited the carer community to provide feedback on topics scheduled for discussion throughout 2026, including:
- Best experience of family contact
- Sibling connections for children and young people in care
- Education for children and young people in care
Consultation closed on 8 June 2026. Feedback will be collated and shared in due course.
Past consultation
Extension on consultation for cultural connections
The Carer Council held extended consultation on cultural connections for children and young people. While all feedback was welcome, the Carer Council particularly sought feedback from carers who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal carers of Aboriginal children and young people.
September – October 2024
The Carer Council invited feedback on topics scheduled for the November meeting and early 2025, including:
- Mental health and peer support for carers
- Workforce consistency and communication with carers
- Therapeutic supports for children and young people
- Cultural connections
These topics are important to the carer community, featured throughout the 2022 Report of the Independent Inquiry into Foster and Kinship Care, and are highly prevalent in CFKC’s advocacy work. Ahead of discussions and consultation, the Carer Council was adequately briefed on existing feedback.
February 2024
The Carer Council invited feedback on topics scheduled for the March meeting, including:
- Care concerns
- Carer remuneration
- Respite
The Carer Council discussed the above topics in line with the broader topic of retention and attraction of carers.
Carers have already provided extensive feedback on these topics in the past, which was summarised for the Carer Council members.
Additionally the Carer Council was briefed on what CFKC has previously heard from carers through CFKC annual surveys, reference groups, information sessions, our carer advocacy service, carers directly contacting us, as well as Dr Fiona Arney’s Report on the Independent Inquiry into Foster and Kinship Care.
