Our History

Around 30 years ago Connecting Foster Carers was a small self-help group of carers who met to exchange support and information in each other’s homes.

Evolving from a grassroots organisation, Connecting Foster Carers – SA was incorporated in 1999 and continues to use the carer voice in the delivery of peak body services.

In her 2016 report ‘The Life They Deserve,’ Royal Commissioner Hon Margaret Nyland AM heard the calls from foster and kinship carers for an organisation that could advocate for them and her recommendation for a funded body was supported by the government.

In 2018, Connecting Foster and Kinship Carers South Australia (CFKC) was provided funding for its Carer Advocacy Service with its own offices and paid staff – representing a major change to support available for foster and kinship carers in South Australia.

Since this time, CFKC has been critical in elevating carers’ voices to ensure they are heard by decision makers. This includes working with the Department for Child Protection (DCP), support agencies and other priority partners to bring about positive change in South Australia.
