What the Carer Advocacy Service does
Connecting Foster and Kinship Carers South Australia’s (CFKC) Carer Advocacy Service works directly with carers to provide individual advocacy when carers experience an issue, and/or conflict with a member of their child or young person’s care team in line with the Statement of Commitment.
We work alongside carers where there have been fractures in child of young person’s care team via the lens of the Statement of Commitment.
All formal foster and kinship carers in South Australia are eligible for this support and/or advocacy, regardless of whether they are members of CFKC.
Our team comprises of qualified and experienced Carer Advocates, under the leadership of the Principal Advocate and Service Lead.
We provide support that acknowledges the real experiences of carers, including:
- listening to the experiences of carers in a kind, responsive, respectful manner
- providing advice regarding whether this aligns with the policies and practices of the Department for Child Protection (DCP)
- engaging with DCP and other key stakeholders to find a timely resolution to issues
- supporting carers to seek internal and external review of DCP decisions
- supporting the escalation of concerns where outcomes have not been satisfactory
- providing referral support to other services where appropriate
Note this is not a crisis response service. If you need urgent assistance, information is available here.
